Immunizations and supplies offered as students return to school

With school only a few days away, several resources are available to help students and parents prepare.

Starting Thursday, the Department of Health in Clay County will offer immunization services at the Clay County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Aug. 17. The immunizations are offered at no cost, but there will be a $12 fee for any child who needs a DH680 or DH681 form without needing vaccine services.

The vaccine event will take place at 2497 State Road 16, Green Cove Springs, in Building Three.

If a child from a different county attends, they will not be turned away, the Health Department says.

School-Entry Health Examinations also are offered by appointment only at the Bear Run Clinic in Orange Park. You can call 904-529-2800 to schedule an appointment.

In Duval County, the Department of Health will offer wellness checkups and immunization services every Wednesday through Sept. 27. There will be two locations: the Center for Women and Children at the Central Health Plaza, at 515 W. 6th St. in Jacksonville, and the South Jacksonville Family Health Center, at 3225 University Boulevard in Jacksonville.

The two locations will offer vaccinations only, and services are available by appointment only by calling 904-253-1130. The hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Coming up Saturday, students and their parent or legal guardian can receive a free backpack, school supplies, a hot dog, chips and a drink while supplies last at Ribault Middle School’s cafeteria. Advice on taking control of your health will be available as well. Students must be present to get the school supplies and food.

The event, from 9 a.m. to noon, is sponsored by Wolfson Children’s Hospital and the Ribault High School class of 1985.

In St. Augustine, the community is invited to a back-to-school block party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at James A. Webster School, 420 North Orange Street. The block party will include wellness services and health resources, extended day information for before and after school activities, and school supplies for elementary, middle and high school students.

Students at Duval County Public Schools go back to school Aug. 14. Students in public schools in Baker, Clay, Nassau, Putnam and St. Johns counties all return Aug. 10.
